STORMS EUNICE, FRANKLIN, GLADYS, AND LIFE’S ‘STORMS’, PART 1

“Steer him away from envy,

If you can,

Teach him the secret of

quiet laughter.”

  • Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his son’s teacher (Stanza 2).

As you are already aware, storms Eunice, Franklin and Gladys coursed through our shores recently starting from the 18th of February throughout the weekend causing havoc of incalculable magnitude.

These led to loss of lives.

At least three reported deaths in England, and properties, residential and commercial properties worth millions of pounds were destroyed.

And in the process, many were rendered homeless and without power. Those made homeless, although temporarily by these storms and the flood that followed afterwards were housed in improvised accommodation – in camps, tarpaulins and in hotels and some lucky people went to shelter with their relatives and friends.

Unarguably, the amount of money that will be paid in insurance will run into millions of pounds.

By my reckoning, it was nature fighting against man as well as nature fighting itself.

Many trees came falling, with one tree lying upon another.

Many buildings too, electricity cables and poles too were brought down, and many residents were left without power for days, if not weeks.

Out of curiosity, it does look to me you would want to know where I was at this time, just I too, out of curiosity ‘d like to know where you were during the stormy gale.

In fact, I was on my way to work during the time the strong wind was blowing everyone here and there very mercilessly.

And I can tell you that although I had my umbrella with me, it proved useless!

I was being tossed forth, back and sideways in the manner of a drunken person under the influence. But I made sure I avoided buildings and big trees for fear they could fall and smash me to pieces or actually kill me.
