VENICE’S SORROW

Flood, flood, flood everywhere,

And no route of escape

Nor a place to which we shall escape.

Therefore, we will remain here with the water,

We will remain here with this water

Unmoved, unbowed, uncowed, but stoical,

for this place – VENICE;

is our home

and our inheritance.

We shall not abandon this place for the water,

And the water too may not abandon here for us.

Our ancestors lived and died here,

so, shall we;

And so, shall our children;

And so, shall our children’s children;

And so, shall their children’s children’s children.

Aaaah! The water?

This water?

This water is always with us.

“The water is always with us.”

And the water has always been with us,

And we are always with the water

As the water is always with us.

The water is us and we are the water;

The water is part of us,

And we are part of the water.

In fact, the water is us,

And we are the water

Created to be together and to be with us

Just as we were created to be with the water.

The water and us were created by the One

To be one with each other,

And one with Him.

Thus, we are the water and the water is us.

The water will always be with us

And we will always be with the water.

This water will always be with us

And we will always be with this water.

Nothing shall separate us from the water

And nothing shall separate the water from us.

Although the water can wash away many things,

And the water may wash other things,

But the water cannot wash us away,

Nor can the water wash away our true selves.

The water can wash away things,

The water can wash away other things,

But this water, the water cannot wash us away,

Nor our spirit,

Nor our soul,

Nor the footprints of our ancestors!
